Euro Drops Against Major Peers Before Spain Debt Auctions

The euro fell to less than .30 for the first time in two months as Spanish bond yields touched a 2012 high after a minister called on the European Central Bank to do more to stem debt-market turmoil.

The 17-nation currency dropped for a second day against the yen and reached the lowest since 2010 versus the pound. The yen strengthened against all of its 16 most-traded counterparts. China’s yuan weakened as the central bank widened the currency’s trading band. Higher-yielding currencies trimmed losses against the dollar after U.S. retail sales rose in March and yields on Spanish government securities pared increases.

“There’s still a hesitation with respect to trading in European bond markets,” said Nick Bennenbroek, head of currency strategy at Wells Fargo & Co. in New York. “The U.S. data was a little bit better than expected. It’s causing a minor risk-on rally.”

The euro fell 0.3 percent to .3040 at 9:59 a.m. in New York after dropping to .2995, the weakest since Feb. 16. The shared currency weakened 0.7 percent to 105.12 yen after declining 0.8 percent on April 13. The euro slipped 0.2 percent to 82.35 U.K. pence after reaching 82.10 pence, the lowest since September 2010. The yen rose 0.4 percent to 80.58 per dollar.

Forex News: China, Unemployment and Oil conspire against the Dollar

The US’s non farm payrolls are due out later on today and for all their trying, the US government has been trumped by a private firm in revealing these numbers.

The street expected about 360,000 jobs were lost, a nice decline and a sign that things might be getting better. However, ADP, the largest payroll processing service in the US, reported that 470,000+ jobs have been “removed from the payrolls” of the companies that ADP services.

Keep in mind that ADP does not service everyone – there are other services and many small businesses do the payrolls by themselves. So it is not out of bounds to think that this number, 470,000 will be higher. For the Dollar, a higher number can be damaging but it is not the only threat to the greenback.

Yesterday, China called for an open debate at next weeks G8 Summit on the viability of another global reserve currency being established. This is a blow to the US efforts to keep the debate out of the IMF and World Bank boardrooms, as they and Britain control the flow at those institutions.

The voices are becoming louder and the masking of their intentions are becoming less – China has now entered the point of no return, the point at which they have firmly committed themselves towards establishing a new world financial order, in which the Dollar is no longer king.

The Dollar fell on this news and the shock from ADP – ironically, the US stock markets rose late in the day. Forex Online traders and Forex chat rooms were abuzz with the news, however the US governments official stance is that ADP’s numbers are NOT official and do not necessarily reflect the non-farms payroll number.

And while the US stock investors seemed to gobble this up, those Forex online traders did not. And I say: good for them.

This is the story that does not die, and it won’t for a while. But as we see the US’s hopes for a second half recovery fading – we should look at the opportunities that are out there for us.

I am still bullish on the Aussie and I am starting to like the Canadian Dollar. As Oil prices rise, as tensions in the middle east drive that precious commodity up, I see opportunity knocking. And I hope everyone is there to answer the door with me.

Euro Weakens Against Dollar on Funding Concern

The euro weakened against the dollar and pared an advance versus the yen as concern that European nations face difficulty funding debt damped demand.

Europe’s shared currency fell as yields on Spanish 10-year benchmark bonds and French five-year debt rose at auctions, fueling speculation on credit downgrades. The dollar climbed versus the yen as Bank of Japan officials signaled they’ll keep acting to weaken the currency. The greenback advanced against all its major counterparts except the pound and the Taiwanese dollar as weekly U.S. jobless claims were higher than forecast.

“Auction results over the past two weeks show that European sovereigns are still able to place paper, but until there is underlying economic growth, investors are going to continue to demand steep yield premiums for the peripherals and even for France,” said Greg Anderson, the North American head of Group-of-10 nations currency strategy at Citigroup Inc. in New York. “People are building yen positions in anticipation of further easing next week.”

The euro declined 0.1 percent to .3106 at 9:26 a.m. New York time. The 17-nation currency was up 0.2 percent to 106.81 yen, after earlier rising as much as 0.7 percent. The dollar appreciated 0.3 percent to 81.49 yen.

Dollar May Weaken Against Euro, Yen, Citigroup Says

July 21 The U.S. dollar may weaken against the euro, the yen and the Australian dollar as global sentiment turns against the greenback, according to Citigroup Inc.
The euro may extend this month’s gains versus the dollar as buying by sovereign wealth managers and central banks bolsters the 16-nation currency, Citigroup said in a monthly note on its foreign-exchange forecasts. The yen may strengthen against the dollar as Japan’s economy begins to rebound, attracting investors to the Asian nation’s assets, the bank said.
“We detect evidence that underlying sentiment remains U.S. dollar negative,” Citigroup analysts including Jeremy Hale, London-based head of macro strategy, wrote in the note to clients yesterday.
The euro will climb to .43 in three months and reach .45 in six to 12 months, Citigroup said in the note. The yen will rise to 93 per dollar in three months and strengthen to 90 in six to 12 months, the company said.
The dollar traded at .4200 per euro and 93.94 yen as of 8:28 a.m. in London.
The Australian dollar is likely to lead gains among so- called commodity currencies, the analysts wrote.
Australia’s currency will advance to 83 U.S. cents in six to 12 months and New Zealand’s currency will rise to 66 cents, the company said. The so-called Aussie traded at 81.21 U.S. cents and New Zealand’s dollar was at 65.30 cents.

Better UK data boost Pound, but not against Euro

Wednesday 31st October 2012
Good afternoon. Sterling rose against most currencies through trading today, but remained fairly flat against the Euro at around the €1.24 level. The reason for the gains is the fact we’ve had some decent and robust UK data releases recently, reducing the chances of further Quantitative Easing in the UK. This afternoon I’ll take a look at the better UK data and what the forecast is for Pound/Euro rates moving forwards.

Better UK data boosts the Pound.

Following last week’s much better than expected UK GDP figures confirming we are no longer in recession, Sterling has performed quite well. In addition, we have also seen much higher than forecast numbers from other releases such as consumer credit, mortgage data and CBI retail sales data, all of which were much better than most had been expected, and mean the outlook for the UK economy is now looking much rosier.

All these better numbers mean there is now much less chance of further monetary easing from the BoE next month. It also means investors are much more confident about investing in the Pound, and that is what has caused Sterling to rise against most other currencies.

Why hasn’t the Pound risen much against the Euro?

It’s mainly due to the fact it’s the end of the month. There was big demand for buying the Euro as global banks wind up their positions for month end, and the European Central bank also had huge demand for Euros today, which has kept the single currency strong and hindered any significant gains for the GBP/EUR cross.

Moving forwards, I believe that the Euro will actually weaken somewhat in the coming weeks. While the UK has returned to growth, in the Eurozone growth is in decline. In particular Germany which is the EU’s largest economy is starting to slow, and this combined with the on-going debt crisis could well cause Euro weakness and help push GBP/EUR rates back up as we head in to November.

Less chance of QE from Bank of England

Due to the better data as highlighted above, many think there is now less chance of Quantitative Easing from the Bank of England next month. This could indeed be the case; however some BoE policymakers have flagged a weaker outlook for growth in the fourth-quarter.

Purchasing Manufacturers' Index data for manufacturing, construction and services are due this week and next week will be watched for an indication of UK economic health into the fourth quarter.

Once these numbers are released, the likelihood of further stimulus or not will become much clearer.

If you need to buy or sell Euros, should you do so now or wait?

This is what everyone wants to know, and of course it is impossible to predict which way rates will go. On the one hand, if the Euro does weaken and UK data continues to impress, rates are likely to recover back towards €1.25. If however the next raft of UK data is not as good as expected and more Quantitative Easing is announced by the BoE, the Pound would likely weaken significantly.

In the current climate, regardless whether you are buying or selling Euros, Stop Loss and Limit Orders are very useful tools. These allow you to place a lower level and if rates drop below this, your currency is automatically secured and your rate fixed. In this way you can continue holding out for any gains, however if the market drops you are not left exposed.

A limit order allows you to place a target level above the current price, and if rates go through this your currency is purchased. This allows you to take advantage of any spikes without having to continually monitor the market.

I can discuss your currency requirements and the timescales you are working to, and then run over the options that are available to you to help protect you against adverse exchange rate movements.

In this way you can take control of your currency requirement and not simply hope that the market will move in your direction. By employing a strategy and giving yourself a target rate, you can often save significant sums than just leaving things to chance.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Extending Asian session downtrend, the European currency declined to 1-week low against the Japanese yen and a 3-day low versus the Swiss franc during early European deals on Friday. The euro also remained down against the currencies of US and UK.

In economic news, Germany`s import price inflation remained stable in August at its highest level in nearly eight years on higher energy prices.

The Federal Statistical Office said today that the import price index rose 9.3% year-on-year in August, marking the same pace as in July, while quicker than the 8.9% increase in June. Meanwhile, economists had forecast the rate to ease to 9.1%. The August rate was the highest since November 2000. In the same period last year, prices were down 0.6%.

The French economy contracted 0.3% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter, confirmed the initial estimate, a final report from the statistical office INSEE revealed today. The economy had expanded 0.4% in the first quarter.

The Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, the European Central Bank, or ECB and the Swiss National Bank or SNB revealed today that they are introducing operations to provide U.S. dollar liquidity with a one-week maturity using their reciprocal currency arrangements or swap lines.

The Federal Open Market Committee authorized a billion increase in its temporary swap facility with the ECB and a billion increase in its facility with the SNB. According to the Fed, these expanded facilities will now support the provision of U.S. dollar liquidity in amounts of up to 0 billion by the ECB and up to billion by the SNB.

Against the US dollar, the European currency showed weakness during early deals on Friday. At 3:55 am ET, the euro-dollar pair touched a low of 1.4568, compared to 1.4610 hit late New York Thursday. The pair is now worth 1.4578.

The European currency that closed Thursday`s North American session at 0.7954 against the British pound edged down to 0.7940 at 5:05 am ET Friday.

The Bank of England said today that it will increase the term of its existing operations to lend US dollar funds against collateral eligible in short-term repos and US Treasuries.

Alongside an operation to lend funds overnight, the central bank will lend US billion of funds for one week today. The Bank of England`s overnight dollar repo operations will be US billion on Friday.

Against the Swiss franc, the single currency edged lower during Friday`s early deals. At 3:30 am ET the euro-franc pair slipped to a 3-day low of 1.5880, compared to 1.5937 hit late New York Thursday. The pair is currently quoted at 1.5891.

The Swiss leading indicator in September declined further to 0.62 points from a revised 0.73 points in August, the KOF Economic Institute said today. August`s reading was upwardly revised from 0.68. Economists were looking for a reading of 0.54 for September.

The euro that closed Thursday`s New York deals at 155.70 against the Japanese yen declined to a 1-week low of 153.50 at 3:55 am ET Friday. The euro-yen pair is currently trading at 153.86.

Core inflation in Japan rose 2.4 percent on year in August, in line with analyst expectations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said today. It also held steady from the July figure, equaling an 11-year high. Overall nationwide CPI was up an annual 2.1 percent, matching forecasts after a 2.3 percent gain on year in the previous month. Overall inflation gained o.3 percent on month.

Across the Atlantic, the US final second quarter GDP, personal consumption expenditure and the University of Michigan`s confidence survey are scheduled for release later in the New York session.

Dollar Falls Toward Seven-Week Low Against Euro on Stock Rally

July 28 -- The dollar fell toward its lowest level in seven weeks against the euro as Asian stocks extended a global rally, adding to evidence investors are shifting to higher-yielding assets.
The Australian dollar rose for a third day against the greenback after the Reserve Bank of Australia said the South Pacific nation’s economy may rebound faster than it forecast six months ago. The euro approached a three-week high against the yen after Deutsche Bank AG said second-quarter profit rose 68 percent, beating analysts’ estimates, on increased revenue from trading bonds and stocks.
“Rising share prices will make it easier for investors to take more risks,” said Toshiya Yamauchi, manager of the foreign-exchange margin trading department in Tokyo at Ueda Harlow Ltd. “Under such circumstances, the dollar and the yen will weaken, especially against the currencies of resource-rich nations and emerging markets.”
The dollar declined to .4275 per euro as of 7:05 a.m. in London from .4232 in New York yesterday, when it touched .4298, the lowest level since June 3. The U.S. currency was at 95.13 yen from 95.18 yen.
The euro rose to 135.80 yen from 135.48 yen yesterday, when it reached 136.10 yen, the strongest since July 2. The U.S. dollar fell to as low as C.0761 today, its weakest versus Canada’s dollar since Oct. 3.
MSCI’s Asia Pacific index of regional shares rose for an 11th day, the longest winning streak since January 2004, adding to evidence investor risk-appetite is increasing. The index climbed 0.9 percent today.
Dollar Index
The Dollar Index was near the lowest level this year before a report that economists said will show U.S. home prices fell at a slower pace in May, indicating that the American economy is recovering and demand for safe haven currencies will fall.
The S&P/Case Shiller index of 20 major metropolitan areas, scheduled for release today, will show property values fell 17.9 percent in May from a year earlier, according to a Bloomberg News survey of economists. The measure was down 18.1 percent in the 12 months ended April.
The Dollar Index, which the ICE uses to track the greenback against currencies including the yen, pound and Swedish krona, was at 78.476 from 78.626 yesterday, near this year’s low of 78.334 on June 2
The Australian dollar climbed after RBA Governor Glenn Stevens said it appears “that the downturn we are having may turn out not to be one of the more serious ones of the postwar era, in contrast to the experiences of so many other countries.”
Upside Risks
“We can much more easily imagine upside risks to the outlook, to balance out the downside ones, than was the case six month ago,” the Reserve Bank chief said in Sydney today.
Stevens left the benchmark lending rate at 3 percent on July 7 for a third month amid signs the lowest borrowing costs in half a century and government spending helped the nation skirt a recession.
“With Australia’s economy apparently doing well, there may be no more scope for interest-rate cuts,” said Masashi Kurabe, head of currency sales and trading in Hong Kong at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd., a unit of Japan’s biggest publicly traded bank. “Higher-yielding currencies such as Australia’s dollar will likely be popular, with demand from people in countries with low yields such as Japan.”
Benchmark interest rates of 8.75 percent in Brazil and 0.25 percent in Sweden compare with 0.1 percent in Japan and as low as zero in the U.S.
The Australian dollar rose to 83.02 U.S. cents from 82.27 cents yesterday, and advanced to 78.97 yen from 78.31 yen.
Deutsche Earnings
The euro gained for a fourth day against the yen after Germany’s largest bank said in a statement today net income rose to 1.09 billion euros (.55 billion), or 1.64 euros a share, from 649 million euros, or 1.27 euros, a year earlier. Deutsche Bank’s earnings exceeded the 944 million-euro median estimate of 13 analysts surveyed.
“The bank’s results were better than expected,” said Lee Wai Tuck, a currency strategist at Forecast Pte in Singapore. “The latest upmove in the euro could be due to this.”
Deutsche Bank’s Chief Executive Officer Josef Ackermann said the banking industry and financial markets stabilized in the quarter, propelling a fourfold gain in income from debt sales and an improvement in equity trading.
Losses in the yen against the dollar were tempered on speculation Japanese exporters are taking advantage of the currency’s drop in the past week to repatriate earnings from overseas assets before the month-end.
Japanese Exporters
“Exporters are prone to buy the yen, given that the end of the month is near,” said Yuji Saito, head of the foreign- exchange group in Tokyo at Societe Generale, France’s third- largest bank.
Japanese companies forecast the yen would average 94.85 per dollar in the 12 months to March 2010, according to the Bank of Japan’s quarterly Tankan survey released July 1.
Adding to pressure on the dollar, China’s Assistant Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao said on the first day of bilateral talks with U.S. officials that his government remains “concerned” about the value of its U.S. assets.
Zhu’s remarks come after repeated public assurances by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner that the U.S. is committed to reining in a record budget deficit once an economic recovery is secured. China is the biggest foreign investor in U.S. government debt, and any decline in demand could push up borrowing costs.
“China has massive holdings of Treasuries, so it is obviously worried,” said Masanobu Ishikawa, general manager of foreign exchange at Tokyo Forex & Ueda Harlow Ltd., Japan’s largest currency broker. “Any diversification away from the dollar could be gradual, and the greenback may weaken a bit.”
